IMPLEMENTATION
REQUIRES A CHAMPION
Implementation of a CMMS is about managing people.
Getting people to look up asset serial numbers or
asking them to do paperwork is never easy. Especially
if the data collected is for management reports
where the people recording this data will probably
not use the data themselves as the reports go to
management. On top of this, a CMMS may initially
be viewed as a work control mechanism rather than
a continuous improvement tool.
With so much work involved and so little reward
seen. Implementing a CMMS is never easy unless the
maintenance department is very small, thus less
people.
In order for implementation to be successful, the
implementors have to be very good change agents.
They must champion the product by communicating
well the rewards of the product. Also it doesn't
hurt for them to have the authority to enact the
change. The implementors need to not only be champions
of the product by being enthusiastic about it but
must also be able to provide directions. Dedicated
CMMS champions with enough authority usually ensures
CMMS implementation success.
